Method

Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. Heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add 1 pound of ground beef and cook for about 5 minutes, breaking it apart. Drain excess fat, leaving about 1 tablespoon in the skillet.
  2. Stir in one diced yellow onion and one chopped green bell pepper, along with a pinch of salt and ground black pepper. Cook for about 4-5 minutes until softened. Add 2 minced garlic cloves and cook for another 30 seconds.
  3. Add one cup of tomato sauce, 1/2 cup of unsweetened ketchup, 1/4 cup of water, and if using, 1 tablespoon of pure maple syrup. Also, add 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar and 1 tablespoon of chili powder. Stir thoroughly to combine.
  4. Increase the heat to bring the mixture to a gentle boil, then reduce to low. Cover and simmer for about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  5. Taste and adjust seasoning if necessary. Serve on toasted gluten-free buns or over baked sweet potatoes.
