  • 1 teaspoon Kosher Salt Feel free to use regular salt but reduce slightly.
  • 1 cup Panko Breadcrumbs Regular breadcrumbs can be used as an alternative.
For the Poppers
  • 8 ounces Soft Goat Cheese Feta or ricotta can be interesting substitutions.
  • 2 cups Oil (Grapeseed, Canola, or Vegetable) Pick a neutral oil with a high smoke point.
For the Finish
  • 1/2 cup Honey Maple syrup works as a vegan alternative.
  • 2 tablespoons Fresh Chives Green onions can replace them if preferred.

Method
 

Steps
  1. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour and black pepper for the coating.
  2. Crack the egg into another bowl, add kosher salt and water, then whisk to make the egg wash.
  3. Pour the panko breadcrumbs into a third bowl for coating the cheese balls.
  4. Roll the soft goat cheese into 24 balls, about 1 tablespoon each, on a parchment-lined tray.
  5. Coat each cheese ball in the flour mixture, then dip in the egg wash, followed by the panko breadcrumbs.
  6. Freeze the coated cheese balls on the tray for about 20 minutes.
  7. Heat about 2 inches of oil in a deep saucepan to 350°F (175°C).
  8. Fry the cheese balls in batches for 1-2 minutes until golden brown.
  9. Drain the fried poppers on a plate lined with paper towels to absorb excess oil.
  10. Drizzle the warm poppers with honey and sprinkle with chopped chives before serving.
